Enjoy the website and have a look through some of the great history and statistics sections:

March 1-15, 2008

Registration: All race applicants, both lottery and lottery bypass, must register between March 1 and March 15.

Register for the Lottery

March 20, 2008

Lottery: The draw to determine this year's field will begin on March 16.

Check the lottery results:

As a reminder: THERE IS NO WAITING LIST!

Between March 20 and June 1, 2008

How to withdraw From The Race: Every year dozens of entrants are felled before race day with the unexpected. We only get about 900 finishers, however this is all we can handle, so we have accounted for these "no shows" already. So, please don't call and ask if you can switch with a friend if you decide not to run. Numbers are NOT transferable. If someone else runs with your number, they will be disqualified and you both will be banned from the race in the future. Several have been caught doing this (the video is seen after the race, and faces that don't match the printed results are noted). This also violates USATF rules and causes errors in the results. To make this process a bit less painful, you may cancel your entry and bypass the lottery in the next year IF you follow these instructions exactly:

Before June 1

  1. Write an email (or a letter) stating that you are dropping out.
  2. Send the email before June 1st (or letter postmarked by May 31)
  3. Forfeit your entry fee and race T-shirt.
  4. If you ordered a souvenir T-shirt or hat when you registered, and you want to receive it, you must notify us of this by May 31. You must also send along a payment of $5.00 per item for postage and handling. We will ship them in the days following the race.
  5. If you ordered a commemorative ChampionChip® when you registered, and you want to receive it, you must notify us of this by May 31. You must also send along a payment of $1 for postage and handling. We will ship it in the days following the race.
  6. Be sure to ask for a confirmation of your withdrawal and save it as proof for next year. (If letter, enclose self-addressed stamped envelope.)
  7. Then when you apply the next year (following all of the usual procedures) you must select "lottery bypass". You will still need to pay, of course, as this is not being done to add runners but as a favor to those who run into problems. Sorry, after May 31st it is too late to do this. And this is only good for the next year. No exceptions. No. None. PLEASE don't ask.
  8. Many people forget step #7 each year and fail to get into the race, so be careful.

After May 31 at Midnight

If you drop out after May 31, there is no need to notify us. You will simply be a "no show". If you want your race shirt(s), see procedures above in T-SHIRT PICKUP section.

Unregistered Runners: Absolutely NO unregistered runners are allowed! There has been excellent cooperation in past years. Very few try to run unofficially. Please do whatever you can to discourage others from doing this to prevent overcrowding and delayed results. And please don't allow someone else to use your number (see above). Remember, anyone who finishes is recorded on video tape. Violators will be refused entry to future Mount Washington races. Unofficials are a threat to the future of the race and are not welcome.

Before Friday June 20, 2008

Race Preparation - Please Read Carefully: This race is different from the average road race. You will need to read and follow directions to avoid race-day problems. Share this information with your driver, too!

1. Arranging a Ride Down:
Remember that your ride down from the top is your own responsibility. Some runners have used the Forum on the web site to arrange their rides. There are more runners needing rides down than drivers looking for riders, so if you need more riders to fill out your quota for a free pass on the road, look in the Forum section and contact someone now. Remember, drivers need at least 3 runner's Auto Passes and an empty car to go up free. See below for more details. As stated clearly in the registration information, race day is too late to be arranging your rides down. Because of the changes at the summit (read again in the signup area for the lottery or under General Instructions), it is not safe to run without having this crucial detail already worked out, and runners asking race officials for assistance with their ride down may be forced to sit the race out!

2. Drivers:
The first cars up the road get the best parking slots in the summit parking lots. They also avoid the crush of cars leaving for the top after 9:00 a.m.. It is strongly recommended that you arrive early and get your runners ready so that the support vehicle can leave for the top before 9:00 a.m.. They will need your bags of warm clothing and your Auto Passes to proceed.

Summit Map: Check out the Summit Map on the web site. This rendering was provided by Michael Ronan Graphics and shows the layout of the parking lots, summit bldg., portable toilets, bag drop, etc. Use this when discussing meeting places with your driver, etc., and remember that the Sherman Adams summit building is no long a guaranteed place to meet as it will be closely monitored for overcrowding. If you do use the building, please get in and back out again quickly so that your fellow runners may also use it. Thanks.

3. Runners - know your drivers:
It is more important than ever, due to recent summit changes , that each runner know who is going to meet them at the top and what they (and their car) look like. Note the license plate too. Most important though is that the driver, dressed warmly for any weather, has your bags of clothing nearby when you finish. Drivers, please make a list of who you are looking for - their names and race numbers - so you can find them as they finish. We can make some announcements when runners finish and cannot find their driver or bags, but this should be the exception please. We will also have a bag drop area directly beyond the finish line for those drivers who must leave the bags for their runners. Please note that it is uncovered and open to the weather. This is a last resort, however, and it is strongly recommended that each driver care for his passengers by looking for them and keeping their clothing close at hand. If the weather is good at the top and you all agree in advance to just go to the car for your warm clothing, that's fine, but locating the car can be a challenge, so the driver needs to assist with this.

Your vehicle may go for FREE if you follow these rules EXACTLY:

  1. The vehicle must be empty of ALL people except the driver.
  2. The driver must have 3 or more passes from runners who he/she will later bring down.
  3. The vehicle must get into line and through the tollbooth before 9:30. Go early to avoid being stuck in line and missing the start.
  4. Before driving into line at the tollbooth, be sure you are ready to go right up. You will need to have the runners' passes and gear. Once through the tollbooth, you must keep going (no stopping for last minute details).
  5. Vehicle/weight restrictions will apply. Honda, Acura, Sterling, Saturn, and Jaguar autos with automatic transmission must show a "1" or "L" on the shifter to be allowed on the road.

No Lincoln Continental 1969 or earlier. Maximum wheelbase on any vehicle: 161" (this excludes most club cab pickups & limousines). No trailers, RV's, campers or oversized vans converted to RV's. No mopeds. No dual wheeled vehicles. No pickups with permanent additions that extend wider than the cab (campers, rack bodies, very wide mirrors). Car-pooling is a must! There isn't much parking space at the top, so take as many as your vehicle will safely carry. Suggested passenger (average size adults) limit guidelines: Compacts (4), Mid-size (5), Full-size Cars and 3/4 ton vans (6), One ton vans (7). Please visit www.Mt.WashingtonAutoRoad.com for more information.

Pre-Arrange Your Ride Down Before Race Day: All participants will be expected to arrange (prior to race day) their own rides back down the mountain. We have a "forum" area on the race web site to help you match drivers and runners prior to your trip to the event. However, your best bet will be to connect with others that you know who are running and to plan this together. You do NOT want to arrive at the top and not have someone there to meet you. You need to have quick access to your warm clothes and supplies and the vehicle for your return trip. Because of the changes at the summit made in 2005, you cannot leave this vital detail for race day.

  1. Find a driver who will also take your auto pass and save a seat for you for the ride down. Each entrant gets one auto pass at check-in on the race number.
  2. Be sure the driver has at least 3 of the auto passes and NO passengers in order to be allowed free passage on the auto road. This is a problem every year as drivers with plenty of passes try to go through the tollgate with passengers. Even if you have a van with seating for 9, you must have no passengers. Sorry, but these are the rules of the Auto Road and are necessary to prevent abuse of the free passes. If you do not follow these rules exactly, the auto passes become useless and your vehicle will be charged at the regular rate of $20 per car and $7 per passenger. Since the driver is not an entrant in the race, it is your responsibility to notify the driver of these rules.
  3. Important note: For any vehicle (even one with passengers and paying the fee) to be allowed up the auto road before the race, it must have at least two runner passes to bring down at least two runners. And, there must be ample room in the vehicle for the runners while still complying with the Auto Road Vehicle Load Limits.
  4. The above steps should be taken as early as possible and well before race day. Drivers who wait until 9:00 AM to leave the parking lot for the summit may find themselves in a long line and may not get through the gate in time. The road is closed from 9:45 AM until 12:30. Late drivers will miss the finish and will be late picking up their passengers.

Friday June 20 & Saturday June 21, 2008 (Race Weekend)

Friday night gathering:
The free Friday night information talk will begin at 5:30 p.m. this year in the Carriage House building at Eagle Mountain House. The details are still being planned and will be described here once the plans are finalized. Please check back later.

Check-In: Number pick up (plus T-shirts, auto & refreshment passes, and a ChampionChip) must be done prior to 9:00 AM on race day. Each runner must pick up his/her own number, etc. We will not give them out to anyone else. PHOTO I.D. REQUIRED - NO EXCEPTIONS. If you are in the area on Friday please check in then, from 4:00 to 9:00 PM, at Eagle Mountain House in Jackson. Race day check-in is from 8:00 to 9:00 AM in the large tent at the mountain. Be sure to allow plenty of time for travel (about 3 ˝ hours from Boston) and to get your driver into line before 9:00.

T-Shirt Pickup: An official wicking tech shirt will be included in your race packet. You may also wish to order souvenir shirts and caps, details of which will be made available after March 1 when the lottery process begins.

Your race T-shirt (and the souvenir shirts and caps, if ordered) must be picked up at check-in on Friday or Saturday (prior to 9:00 AM). If you decide after May 31 not to come to the race, you may send a friend with a note (include your name, date of birth, and signature) giving him or her permission to pick up your shirt(s). Sorry, but we do not mail these shirts out. Unclaimed shirts are sold at the race.

Numbers: Please pin your race number to your FRONT side and keep it VISIBLE throughout the race. Do not fold or tear the number. Thank you! A photographer en route will need to see your number in order to identify you and send you your proofs. At the finish, we will need to see your number as you approach. At the end of the chute, we may take the large tear off portion to record your finish position. The small tabs are your auto and refreshment passes.
